Chateau D’Arlay Vin de Liqueur Macvin, Rouge (375mL)
(Available in 375mL)
One of the most unusual wine estates in France is Chateau d'Arlay, an historic property that was acquired by the Laguiche family in 1960. They own 74 acres in the Cotes du Jura (a largely forgotten appellation) planted with everything from Pinot Noir to such indigenous grapes as Trusseau [sic], Poulsard and Savagnin as well as the more common Chardonnay. The wines are often released very late, and one of their specialties is their Vin Jaune, a sensational wine that makes a great accompaniment with foie gras. However, that cuvee is too expensive to include in this report. Two-thirds Pinot Noir blended with one-third brandy. Aged four years in cask followed by one year in old oak before being released.

Clos Barrot’ Bourgueil Rouge
The textures, in the youth of these wines, are tasty and fresh but always halved. With age, the frame is loosened even more to let out notes of leather, nothing animal and always blackcurrant and cherry.

Clos Des Papes Le Petit Vin d’Avril Rouge
The Le Petit Vin d’Avril (two-thirds from the 2005 vintage and one-third from 2004) is juicy, with loads of crunchy cherries and new saddle leather notes with some pepper, flowers, and spice. It’s a vin gourmande, as the French would say, and best drunk in its first several years of life.
This exquisitely run estate continues to turn out wines of great fragrance, richness as well as flavor authority and integrity. The yields are always among the lowest in the appellation. While they have 87 acres and can produce as much as 8,000 cases of Chateauneuf du Pape, the yields in 2003 were 23 hectoliters per hectare, in 2004, 22 hectoliters per hectare, and in 2005, 21 hectoliters per hectare. Their best value, and it’s one heck of a bistro wine, is the non-vintage concoction of Grenache, Syrah, Merlot, and Carignan actually cropped at an amazingly low 32 hectoliters per hectare.

Domaine Pierre Riffault Sancerre Blanc
This white Sancerre (Sauvignon Blanc) is vinifed in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks. In 2005, they began stirring the lees for more body, aroma and favors. The wine is then racked in the spring after 6 months of ageing before its initial bottling.
The wines are blended from our different terroirs; the "caillottes" lend fruit and freshness while fint-based soils lend minerality and ensure that the wine develops well. This creates a more typical, more balanced and more complex wine. White Sancerre is a fine match for fish and seafood.
It may also be enjoyed on its own as an aperitif, and of course with the local crottin de Chavignol goat’s cheese.
