Nerello Mascalese is a dark-skinned varietal most common on the volcanic slopes of Mt. Etna. Recent DNA tests confirm it is an offspring of Sangiovese and remains the bulk of Etna wines easily surpassing its blending partner, Nerello Cappuccio. These wines are fresh with excellent minerality and complex flavors. Many Mascalese wines have a perfume similar to Barolo and Burgundy. Recent popularity is due to winemakers creating a light body wine reminiscent of Pinot Noir. Some vines predate the phylloxera epidemic of 1880’s.
